The Office of LGBTQ Affairs conducts, commissions, and analyzes​ research to learn more about experiences of LGBTQ communities in Santa Clara County. Research findings are used to inform program development and to help tailor services and activities to needs.​

Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Expansive Employment Study

Conducted by research firm Community Marketing and Insights, this 2022 research study explores the range of challenges that transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive community members in Santa Clara County face in their jobs and career paths, providing deeper insights on barriers to employment as well as positive workplace experiences, goals, and recommendations for supporting transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive people in reaching their full potential.

Recommendations for Santa Clara County Youth Well-Being

Conducted by Rhodes Perry Consulting, in collaboration with multiple County administrators, community partners, and LGBTQ+ liaisons, this report will assist leaders with informing their broader approach to promote the health & well-being of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) LGBTQ+ young people - and will assure that fellow administrators and community partners’ ideas and concerns are stitched within the County’s efforts to build a dynamic initiative, ensuring the delivery of culturally specific services for BIPOC LGBTQ+ young people are centered around those vulnerable to family rejection, school bullying, houselessness, the criminal justice system, and violence.

LGBTQ+ Older Adults in Santa Clara County 2021, Karen Fredriksen Goldsen, PhD

LGBTQ+ Older Adults in Santa Clara County Study

Led by researcher Dr. Karen Goldsen, in collaboration with more than 20 local community organizations, agencies, and government offices including the Office of LGBTQ Affairs and Social Services Agency - Department of Aging and Adult Services, this 2021 study identifies the unmet needs of LGBTQ+ older adults and informs on future priorities, programs, and policies through the lived experiences and recommendations of LGBTQ+ older adults across Santa Clara County.

Transgender Community Assessment

From 2018 to 2020, the Office of LGBTQ Affairs worked with consultant Danielle Castro, MA, MFT to implement and conduct a transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive community needs assessment in Santa Clara County. Completed in 2022, this intergenerational community-based participatory research study identifies social and health service gaps for transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive people and outlines community identified solutions and recommendations to address such gaps due to anti-trans bias and stigma.
