Support LGBTQ Youth On Your Campus!

According to the Trevor Project, “LGBTQ youth who report having at least one accepting adult were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year.”1

The County of Santa Clara Office of LGBTQ Affairs and the Behavioral Health Services Department are providing free online trainings for all caring adults connected to middle and high schools across the county.

Sign up your school today to gain access to the FREE online - training to address the needs of the LGBTQ youth on campus and create a safer school environment for all students.

Step In, Speak Up! is a 30-minute module that provides both didactic instruction on LGBTQ terminology as well as two conversation simulations that help prepare users to lead real-life conversations with students to curtail harassment and support those who may be struggling as a result of bullying or isolation. Users will learn how to respond to biased language, address harassment in the classroom, and support a young person experiencing mental health issues, including suicidal ideation.

The module itself will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. However, we advise that you set aside an hour to debrief and explore next steps and resources.

The training module focuses on scenarios most relevant to middle and high school educators and staff. However, educators and volunteers serving all ages will benefit from the content as well.

While this online training can be taken in any environment, we recommend that staff and teachers take this during professional development or staff meeting sessions. We have found this to be the most effective way for participants to complete the training and begin important conversations surrounding LGBTQ experiences on campus
